Well crafted beers but targeted to middle of the road beer drinkers. For a place named Hops I didn't find much evidence of the flower in the beer! The food is well above average for brewpub standards. I live within two miles of the La Jolla Hops but only visit there every couple of months. The service continues to be horrible -- inattentive, not interested in or enthusiastic about beer. It's been horrible every time we visited, so I imagine the management lacks an understanding of service. Now they've begun free entree coupons in local papers. They are in a no-lose location so they must be doing something wrong to be headed down the drain. I suggest that it is the tragically poor service that will lead to their demise.

Good after work joint. The cask beer is tasty. If you sit outside the eye candy is excellent. Nice TV screens to catch sporting events. Good place for kids.

Dropped in last week after a several year absence while waiting to get a set of glasses made nearby. Tried 3 beers and all were undrinkable to my pallete. Gawdawful stout. Just so you know how my tastes run, I'm a HUGE fan of Pizza Port beers. I can not imagine how anyone who truly enjoys beer would ever drink any of this place's offerings a second time. Come for the food and nice scenery, leave for the stuff they call beer.

I've never been to a Hops! that I didn't like, and the La Jolla pub is worth hunting for.

The staff make this a nice place to pop in for a beer and plate of food. My first stop here found me drinking a hearty high-octane (9%) brew along with a bowl of black bean soup. Both were memorably good. My second stop found me drinking the red as no mega-brews were available. A wonderful salad, chips and salsa and the black bean soup were consumed with a friend. She had some sort of "English" ale that didn't do it for her or me. She switched to the red and was quite pleased. On both visits, the folks working there were fantastic. If I was to run my own establishment, these are the folks I'd want holding down the fort. While I usually avoid these trendy looking "upscale" places, Hops has proven to be a consistantly enjoyable escape in La Jolla, a town that exudes upscale.

The next evening I had to myself so I drove further out of town to find the beer. There were a few places in the LaJolla area so I went there. First stop was Hops Bistro. This is smack dab in the middle of a mall in an extremely built up area north of San Diego. It looked like a nice place and I was hungry. The black bean soup was very good. I got into a very nice conversation with a guy from Schuykill haven, PA. who moved out there many years ago. He fondly remembered the Yuengling products of his youth and I filled him in a little on what was happening in our area of south central PA. The Pale Ale was pleasant and the rest of the beers were good.

Very boutique style but the selection and taste were above par. A little out of the way but worth the trip if you have time to see the mall that surrounds the place.

Pleasant atmosphere and decor. Wide selection of beers, all top-fermented. IPA generously dry-hopped and very good. Oktoberfest and red ale thin and insipid, and the "Knockout Stout" is nothing more than a brown ale--one can see through the glass with ease, and there is very little roasted barley or black patent malt flavor.
